Volunteer-Led Free Healthcare
in West Asheville, NC

What We Do

We operate three mobile, free clinics each week embedded in the 12 Baskets free cafe in the heart of West Asheville during lunch hours.Mutual Aid Wellness Collective provides free access to basic healthcare needs including over-the-counter medication, wound care and treatment, and medication management. This care is otherwise unaffordable and unavailable to our unhoused and uninsured neighbors in the community. As a volunteer free clinic, we do not bill insurance or charge for services, and are supported by grants and donations
We collaborate with other community organizations like NC Med Assist, Western Carolina Medical Society, Tierra Fertil and MettaH, as well as local nurses, doctors and medical residents to bring healthcare to people where they are.

Who We Are

Mutual Aid Wellness Collective is a volunteer-led and volunteer-operated mobile free clinic in West Asheville, North Carolina. We are a collaborative of providers and community members who come together to care for our vulnerable neighbors.A core group of longtime medical providers and volunteers became a fiscally sponsored nonprofit in 2025 after leading a free clinic for two weeks at the Double Crown, a local dive bar that free market & volunteer hub after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. As Helene recovery progressed, we moved our pop-ups to 12 Baskets Cafe and became a founding member of the West Asheville Home Hub with Counterflow Safe Shelter.

Why It Matters

As a secular free clinic we orient ourselves alongside people who do not have sufficient access to healthcare for any reason: income, legal status, housing status, marginalized identity, etc. The members of our community who receive healthcare services and resources from us benefit from care that is non-judgemental, non-coercive and compassionate, on top of being free of charge. The providers who volunteer with us build relationships with fellow community members outside of the typical provider-patient hierarchy, co-creating a liberatory future focused on harm reduction, autonomy and care. We connect hundreds of community members with essential healthcare, supplies and support. Our location in we Baskets Cafe and relationships with other community providers allows us to reduce access barriers by embedding healthcare in existing neighborhood systems of care.
